FAQ

  • Do the applications work on any portable or mobile device?

Yes, although functionality may vary! All our applications now work via a web browser and the capabilities of that browser will dictate what you can and can't do.  The most important distinction is between browsers that support Gears and those that don't.  Gears enables you to cache keys, forms, maps and images offline, so you don't need connectivity.  Gears also enables the browsers to 'talk' to the GPS....we recommend using Opera Mobile 9.5 which is freely available here .  If you wish to use WildKey or WildForm 'live' you should be able to undertake this on any browser.

  • Do I need to have a GPS on my device to use the software?

No…although a GPS does add more functionality to the applications, allowing you to record and map observations (and to navigate when using WildMap)…however you can get by without one!

  • I can’t get my GPS to work!

This is a perennial problem for all software linking to a GPS….basically you need to have the settings of your GPS set to the right COM port and BAUD rate….a good starting point is this table.  Installing applications like QuickGPS can dramatically improve this as this provides the GPS with information (you will need to connect the device to update this info).

  • I have a proxy server and can't get my device to Activesync?

A proxy server can cause some diffculties in being able to allow handhelds to access the internet.  Great instructions are available at www.handheldeducation.co.uk/pdawirelessinternet.htm http://www.handheldeducation.co.uk/pdawirelessinternet.htm
If after completing these instructions and you are connecting via USB/Activesync (rather than wireless) and getting ' the page you are looking for cannot be found ... " message,  then  altering the registry file LSPValue.reg may help. (Note: Microsoft and WIldKnowledge do not support users that edit the registry!). simply right click on this link http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/LSPvalue.reg ,  "save link as..." or however you download files from links in your browser. Save it to your desktop. Right click on the file... it's a file with the name LSPvalue.reg and pick "merge" from the list.

  • How do I get base maps for my WildMaps?

All maps used in WildMap must be in a jpeg format.

The easiest place to try first is OpenStreetMap www.openstreetmap.org/. Just search for the postcode or place name and zoom in, as the detail changes as you zoom. The maps on this site are being added to constantly, so even if the area you look for is not available in great detail, the detail might be improved a few months on. Use the 'Export' option and save the map as a jpeg. If you use maps from OpenStreetMap, please copy and paste this to the map description when you create the map 'Maps produced by OpenStreetMap under the creative commons licence http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/'

Otherwise, all LEA schools have access to a variety of free maps from the LEA’s Ordnance Survey Liaison Officer (OSLO). For the name of your local contact, phone: 08456 050505 or email: customerservices@ordnancesurvey.co.uk Alternatively, if you are already an AEGIS customer you will shortly be able to import geo-referenced maps from their website.

Individual users or users from other organisations must provide their own aerial images or maps without infringing copyright.

All base maps can be geo-referenced in our map room.
