FAQ

Do the applications work on any mobile device?

Yes, although functionality may vary! Our applications work via the mobile web browser and the capabilities of that browser will dictate what you can and can't do.  Native apps for Android and IPhone will be available from August / September 2011

How much does it cost?

You can use any WildKnowledge application by paying an annual subscription - you can also purchase an organisational subscription by contacting us at gowild@wildknowledge.co.uk

I am interested in creating and selling my own content, is this possible?

Whilst the WildKnowledge community shares free content, it is also possible to charge for premium content which WildKnowledge can distribute as stand alone apps for you. For example you may be a visitor attraction which wishes to charge visitors to use the guide. Please contact us if you are interested in this service. Individuals who create popular open WildProjects can also partner with WK to create standalone apps.

How do I get base maps for my WildMaps?

All maps used in WildMap must be in a jpeg format.

The easiest place to try first is OpenStreetMap www.openstreetmap.org/. Just search for the postcode or place name and zoom in, as the detail changes as you zoom. The maps on this site are being added to constantly, so even if the area you look for is not available in great detail, the detail might be improved a few months on. Use the 'Export' option and save the map as a jpeg. If you use maps from OpenStreetMap, please copy and paste this to the map description when you create the map 'Maps produced by OpenStreetMap under the creative commons licence http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/'

Otherwise, all LEA schools have access to a variety of free maps from the LEA’s Ordnance Survey Liaison Officer (OSLO). For the name of your local contact, phone: 08456 050505 or email: customerservices@ordnancesurvey.co.uk Alternatively, if you are already an AEGIS customer you will shortly be able to import geo-referenced maps from their website.

Individual users or users from other organisations must provide their own aerial images or maps without infringing copyright.

All base maps can be geo-referenced in our map room.
