Lion Watch

June 12, 2012

Ewaso Lions and Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders have partnered on a project to enhance ongoing research in the Ewaso Nyiro ecosystem through an innovative citizen-science project called ‘Lion Watch’. Lion Watch will train local guides to accurately identify and monitor individual lions in the region using data recording GPS devices that include a specialized app developed by WildKnowledge. These guides will record sightings of lions through this device, which will upload the information to the associated Lion Watch website and give researchers up-to-date information on lion movement. The website will give tourists an engaging way to see the lions before, during, and after their trip to the area, and will hopefully inspire them to become Lion Ambassadors at home. Partners involved in the project aim to communicate the plight of declining lions through this innovative approach and hope it will become a call to action!
